Why in News?
The Defence Minister recently launched the Indian Navy’s destroyer warship INS Surat and frigate INS Udaygiri in Mumbai.
INS Surat
- Overview: Fourth ship of the Project 15B Destroyers, following Visakhapatnam, Mormugao, and Imphal.
- Name Origin: Named after Surat, Gujarat’s commercial capital with a rich maritime history.
- Construction: Built using block construction methodology, assembling hulls at different locations and integrating at MDL, Mumbai.
- Project 15B Features:
- Advanced Guided Missile Destroyers with state-of-the-art weapons, sensors, and stealth.
- Equipped with BrahMos missiles, long-range SAMs, and indigenous weapon systems.
